Active learning strategy-role play activity

I research on role playing activity with Nileshbhai,
The following is our understanding increase by this research,

One of the most effective training methods is role playing. Role-play is a valuable teaching and training tool that delivers immense amount of imprinted learning. This learning is retained and recalled better through the role-play experience. While it is evolving as a very effective, interactive teaching and training tool, many feel unprepared and uncomfortable about participating, or using role-play in routine teaching and training.
I am constantly amazed at the level and depth of learning that occurs through effective deployment of this tool, the way it can be adapted to teach anything from knowledge, skills or to explore and expose attitudes.
  • ·         What are some of the topics / concepts that can be taught using this strategy?  Explain with example.
So as a facilitator we can use role play activity at many place like  role play on telephone conversation, going to shop, Cheating out from hotel, checking in hotel, travel booking, order taking in restaurant, job interview, customer service, asking for direction, Restaurant Role Play, Student-Teacher Conversation Role Play, talking with doctor, talking with our senior, asking and telling time, asking for price etc..
  • ·         What are 5 benefits that this strategy would provide for your students?
1. By Role playing we can develop greater involvement with the issues and knowledge that is the focus of training.
2. Role playing also allows assessment of how well learner understands and can apply what is learned, as indicated in their behavior.
3. Because role plays can be involving, both in emotional and cognitive ways, they can also be used to help people understand others, and the positions of others. For example, a person can role play a position with which they disagree, to better understand that position.
4. Positive impact
5. Build confidence
6. Develop listening skill
7. Creative problem solving
8. Credibility
9. Self awareness
10. Learners learn more from their peers
  • ·         What are the situations in which you will not use this strategy? Why?
In my experience, many role play scenarios aren't well designed. "Not well designed" can go in two directions. Some scenarios are poorly thought out, with insufficient context and background for the skills in question. At other times, there's way too much extraneous information; participants feel like they're reading a script rather than practicing a skill.
Sometimes students are not comfortable with role play scenarios, and this can affect his/her performance.
Shy and Less confident learners will try to avoid to take part in activity, and More confident learners can do all things by their own and rest of are not participating.

Thus role play activity has many advantages and disadvantages but to keep some points in mind we can use this activity batter in our classroom like give students clear instructions about their scenario, Role play should be kept short, there should be clear instructions on what the aim is and care should be taken when pairing people, put weaker learners with stronger ones- differentiation, All learning should be supported with resources that cover all learning styles; facilitator should monitor discussions etc to ensure learners stay on task; facilitator should group peers appropriately according to skill level and compatibility to ensure that weaker learners gain.

Methods used in my classrooms...

In my classroom i used different kind of methods...
like..
some time start my lecture straight away with introduction to the topic.
TCL.

group activity.
debate.
discussion.
project and market survey.
some motivational videos.
some powerpoint presentations.
games and story telling.
chart making and presentation of that chart.
peer learnings.
workbooks and assessments also.
guest and success full students lectures.
SCL

Objectives of using this different kind of methods in my classroom are..
to give students a good knowledge.
give courage and motivation and self confidence to live in the society.
engage learners more in the classroom.
make participation more effective.
remove stage fear and facing the real life challenges.
provide some concrete skills so they can earn themselves.
to find their own ways of success and find solutions to their problems..

bring out their hidden potential and creativity.

I use this all methods because all learners are not on same ground and same back ground.
we have to keep all learners on the same pitch.
so if we try this kind of different methods in our classrooms all can take positive points which they want.
we have to teach that leaning is a life long process and journey..

students responds in the staring is not well.
but after two or three days they find interesting and after they participate and involve very well.
some learners are very fast and creative.
some are leaders and some are shy.
but i try to make them learn by peer learning.
they can learn themselves and helps others to learn..
it encourages and motivates us also..

and in the end its all about Relationship...

Understanding Facilitation....

In my point of view communication are major two types.
one is verbal communication and second is non verbal communication.
communication is made by speech, body language and by tone of our speech.
by our behavior some persons understand us.

communication is essential part of our facilitation approach.
you always known by your communication style among your society and students always see you.

all facilitators are different communication style.
two way communication is always effective.
without communication we cant survive in this world.

But facilitative approach is some kind of difference.
we have to keep balance in communication and try to do effective facilitation to our learners.
communication is made by speech and by our body language.
but facilitation is made by introduction, gathering, selecting, handling, planing and conclusion.
this approach try to encourage the students to learn from themselves and from their real life experiences.
to face the challenges and problems the will face in future.
good facilitation approach are made by three stage.
like we are architects.
we prepare a design and agenda then our role change like we are becoming a pilot for our groups journey.
he must be alert and in any condition he has the responsibility to land the plane safe.
bring the group on earth with the sense of closure and gratitude for a safe and productive journey.
then we have to play a role of Guide.
we need to lead the group steady presence, capable of helping the group work through its moments of panic, doubt and disagreements.
this skills are obtained through our inner work and lots of practice with groups.
in some ways students and teachers are equal rights.
but there are different responsibility of teachers and students...

Teaching Approach-concept video....

Ans-1..
after saw the first concept video i understand that Bhavna think about the people who are going to eat this Dal that they all like her Dal cause she made this Dal following by recipe.
she add more salt and Dal is little bit more salty but she thinks that all likes her Dal cause she strictly follow the recipe.
if we think and compare this video to teaching approach its just curriculum based teaching method where teacher strictly follow the curriculum and think that all learners/students like it cause she teaches as per the method and as per guideline.

Ans-2..
after saw the second concept video i understand that Amitav thinks about the recipe that he follow the recipe and made the Dal but he added her own thinking and efforts making the Dal little bit more spicy.
he don't want to follow the recipe but according to the test and need he added his own thinking and made the Dal.
he think that i can make better than this.
he cook the Dal different way and in Tadka he added more chilly and garlic also.
so the Dal is become more spicy.
if we think and compare this video to teaching approach teacher or facilitator added more efforts and own thinking in making the teaching and education better.
after reading the curriculum teacher add some more thinking and efforts to delivered  good training or teaching.

Ans-3..
i have to say about the cooking process in the third video that its a best way of making Dal.
cause every ones need and expectations are different so we have to understand the environment around us and than decide how to teach.
with the help of our students and our peers we can do this.
cause we are facilitators and we dont teach.
we help them finding their hidden potentials and skills.
according to our students needs we teaches them.
in every batch there are different kind of students we have so we have to adjust and think and moderate ourselves to full fill their expectations with the help of others.

Ans-4..
those three elements plays a very big role in my teaching approach cause when i join this field i am strictly follow the curriculum for teaching but after getting experienced i added my thinking and efforts to teaching and then i felt that we are not teachers we are facilitators.
then with the help of my peers and from my organization i am here.

content and teacher also very important but student are in the center of the class..
we have to keep balancing approach.

Ans-5..
i define my teaching approach now as per the third video cause now i am very much experienced and know how to facilitate.
i give students to their own space to share their views, ideas.
Being a reflective facilitator and striving for excellence in facilitating I  considering each aspect of my teaching approach to ensure that i am doing my best to facilitate student learning.
what are the need and expectations of the students and what kind of help the want.
i just help them for making and building their confidence and self esteem..

Different elements of teaching approach....

In my point of view the principal elements that make teaching and learning possible and attainable are the teachers, the learners and a conductive learning environment.
The teacher serves as the prime mover of the education wheel.
the learners are the key participants in the learning process.
the favorable environment provides essential features and ingredients that could make headway in guiding the processes and methodologies needed for smooth linkage among the tree.

i saw the video and observe that in the first video facilitator was just taking his class, there is no excitement, only one way communication, no interaction there,
students doesn't participate in the class and teacher was not very much interested.
just taking theory basis lecture.
in our education system there is this type of lectures are given.
just teachers doing their jobs.
teacher don't know whether the students understanding or not.

but in the second video all the elements of teaching was there.
facilitator was very much exited and keep interested in conducting the class.
very focus on what she is facilitating.
two way communication was there and interaction was also there.
students freely participate in the discussion and giving ans vary well.
some basic rules made in the starting of the class.
so every one must have to participate.
its a best example taking class and teaching method with activity/game.
very good.

so we have to keep those little thing in our mind while taking our classes.
