SCL and TCL

Talking about TCL and SCL.

My one session has been a mix of TCL and SCL. The session objective of the session was to impart the importance of Team work among the participants.
I used the SCL technique, reason being that the participants involved in the session could not relate the topic to them selves. Spoken lecture gave them idea of what team work means but they still had a vague knowledge about how team work helps and why is i important to be a good team player.
At the end of the session that we conducted the feedback from the students was really positive. they were able to relate their lives and the incidences where lack of team work had made them fail.

MUDDIEST POINT STRATEGY

The Muddiest Point Strategy is one of the simplest classroom assessment techniques. It is efficient and provides a high information return for a very low investment of time and energy. The technique consists of asking students to jot down a quick response to the question .what was the unclear concept or topic ? The focus of the Muddiest Point assessment might be a lecture, a classroom discussion, a laboratory investigation , a home work assignment or a film. This strategy provides information on what students find most confusing about a particular lesson or topic. The feedback can be used to discover which points are the most difficult for students to learn clear.Teaching decision about which topics to emphasize and how much time to spend on each can then be made.In response to the classroom assessment technique, learners must quickly identify what they do not understand and articulate those muddy points.Even though the technique is extremely simple to administer, students are required to engage in  some higher order thinking when responding.

Concepts to be taught by using this strategy

This is one the best strategy in which every subject may be possible to be taught .

Example from Life Skills. from the first week of the class students might not know about the definition of Life Skills and use in real life situation.Further ahead if we teach students about the concept of Responsibility. They are not able to distinguish between own responsibility and for others might be cleared after taking another session on the topic or the unclear question again.

Example from English:In English language if we teach students about the Noun and Pronouns they might not be understood the difference between noun and pronouns and might face problem in using nouns as verbs and verbs as noun. so in a little time we could go for a quick succession and remove the doubts of the students by knowing their muddiest point.

Example from Science: If we teach students about the difference between enthalpy of formation and enthalpy of activation. These responses let the teacher know that the students had not firmly grasped the differences between entropy and enthalpy and that many of them probably did understand the principal of isolation.

Five benefits of this strategy:

1.Provide just in time feedback about the teaching-learning process.
2.Provide information about student learning.
3.Help students become better monitors of their own learning.
4.Help students feel less anonymous, even in large courses.
5.Students can be confident without fear of being insulted by asking unclear.

Can not be used: we think that this strategy could not be more effective in role play method because in role play we can not assess things but try to find out the themes and each student play roles according their own pace and talent. One important thing that in role play we do not go in speculation but everything is clear picture before us.

SCALS

Hello!!

To start off with the video that I am sharing here, it is real expereince based video. It has two parts, i will be sharing only one part of it with you all and if you like to see the continuation you can watch the second part as well.

Why This video?

I was not satisfied with the student centric approach and I was keen to know about how can we bring in balance among students who are active and students who are not really very active, keeping in mind I just have 90 days to maintain balance, skill them, upgrade them and place them.

Some of the best things I got to know through his video are:
1. Balancing a class having different students.
2. Methods and techniques that I am using and are wrong.
3. Learning Progress.

And many more to pen down.

This video is a part of experiment done by Mr. Dylan William, who has been a teacher and now advisor to the government.

Thank you!!!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J25d9aC1GZAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iD6Zadhg4M

FEEDBACK

Before starting off with the SCALS module and sharing the video and some points related to it, I want to sincerely thank mastercoach team as through facilitation module and SCALS I have encountered certain areas, methods and reactions through the videos and other worksheets which has changed my ideology of being a facilitator. For example the video on why do we go to college and schools. If it would have been me who has to answer, O also would have said the same things as spoken by others but when I settled down with the Why of School/College, I was amused to see I just didnt know. I had spent my years going to school and college without even knowing what for am I going there.
A simple answer job did not satisfy me, so I again did a brain storming tarting from the time a student visits our centre till the time he leaves and based on that I have  shared my understanding of why do trainees come to our center.
In addition to it, I also want to add that while I was watching the SCALS video; "Class of Rowdies", i was not actually satisfied with the approach of the trainer there, but again for me this video was complete turn about asking me if this is not the correct way , how should it be?
How can we balance a class of two groups, one group who is energetic and keen to learn and second group which is interested to learn but is not able to learn.
With your trigger video, I got a question of what do you mean by student centric approach and to what extent is it possible?
I checked many videos and came across a video that was an eye opener for me. Many things which I used to do, think and practice were wrong.

Thank you to all of you for bringing in such a platform because with out it I don't think, I would have been bothered about knowing and understanding students, facilitators and my own self. All of these I have came across has induced a new energy in me to continue with the course and have developed a great interest in checking my own self and looking around for more feed back.

Thank you!!!!

Understanding Learning

Talking about the needs that drives a learner to visit and then join the course that we offer, I believe that the prime need of them coming to our center is evoked by us. By this I mean that deep within most of them know that they need a medium to survive but the thought evoking process, I feel is taken care by us during mobilization. If at all we get to see some walk inns' at our center, which although remain very few, the basic requirement that I understand remains the need to learn without being taught. Most of our trainees visited our centers because they wanted to acquire the knowledge that could help them get a good job and also lead a happy life, but all of them had a very common concern they did not wanted to be taught.
So according to me, a learner visits our center with an approach of being heard rather than to listen. They aspire to develop skills for a better job but the skills must match their interest and the learning process must satisfy their idea of learning.

REVIEW THE VIDEO EVERY KIDS NEED A CHAMPION

REVIEW THE VIDEO EVERY KIDS NEED A CHAMPION

(A)What I like in the video is that the teachers attitude and positive thinking about the students she said that I am the best teacher and you are the best students let’s put all together so you could show everybody else how to do it.
She said some basic ideas of teaching like values and importance of human connections and relationships.
You ought to just throws in a few simple things seeking first to understand as opposed to being understood, apologizing

(B)What ideas stayed with me are the way of thinking about students whether they are able to take part in all activity or in finish all lessons on time or not.
Encourage them, do the things they like, made feel them they are somebody, left a legacy of relationships that could never disappear

(C)some of the sentences caught my affection are
James comer says  that no significant learning can occur without relationship
Teachers are great actors and actresses
George Washington says all learning is understanding relationships
Kids don’t learn from the people they don’t like

(D) cause of understand the relationship between facilitator and students we have to watch this video
To do our role best

Every Kid Needs A Champion

Dear All

Before starting off with my experience of watching the video, I want to thank master coach for sharing this video, as it has put a deep impact on my brain I would say.
So coming back to the video, the complete video was a very refreshing as it refreshed my thoughts, my ideology of a trainer. I liked this video a lot because somewhere definitely I could connect my style of teaching with that what was discussed in the video.
The Idea that stayed and will always revolve in my head is ,"you can not like all your trainees, you just have to be great actors at time", which I am not good at but I have a thirst of learning HOW!!
The sentences that triggered my brain and heart were, "Kids don't learn from people they don't like"!
and second one was,"You know you say it loud and it starts to become a part of you".
Lastly," -18 sucks all the life out of you, + 2 says I ain't all bad"!!!

I believe that as we are progressing to understand our role a s a facilitator, it is very important to understand the behavior or category in which we fall. Associating it with me, I mean that Am I a kind of teacher whose role is just to train, a kind of teacher who is easily annoyed by the students I don't like, the teacher who believes in giving marks as per the test and not looking at the other side of it.

Thank you again and i am really looking forward for this module!!!

Reflection of The Trigger Video

In the trigger video, the lady with her daughter looks suspicious about the man. Mainly because of his looks. The man in the video seems to be an Indian and he looks calm and pleasant. He is wearing his traditional attire. He doesn't bother about the looks of the lady. And to talk about my opinion about the next move, I think it is something in relation with the man we had first seen in the video because he was quite quick in his steps. I guess that the cop might catch hold the Indian but the defaulter would be the other man shown in the video.

Look At Life Differently

Hello!

We all have heard time and again about motivation and power of it, the stories below might interest you.

1. Everyone has a Story in Life

A 24 year old boy seeing out from the train’s window shouted…
“Dad, look the trees are going behind!”
Dad smiled and a young couple sitting nearby, looked at the 24 year old’s childish behavior with pity,
suddenly he again exclaimed…
“Dad, look the clouds are running with us!”
The couple couldn't resist and said to the old man…
“Why don’t you take your son to a good doctor?”
The old man smiled and said…
“I did and we are just coming from the hospital, my son was blind from birth, he just got his eyes today.

Every single person on the planet has a story. Don’t judge people before you truly know them. The truth might surprise you.

2. Shake off your problems

A man's favorite donkey falls into a deep precipice;
He can't pull it out no matter how hard he tries;
He therefore decides to bury it alive.

Soil is poured onto the donkey from above.
The donkey feels the load, shakes it off, and steps on it;
More soil is poured.

It shakes it off and steps up;
The more the load was poured, the higher it rose;
By noon, the donkey was grazing in green pastures.

After much shaking off (of problems)
And stepping up (learning from them),
One will graze in GREEN PASTURES.

3. The Elephant Rope

As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn't, they were stuck right where they were.

Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.

4. Potatoes, eggs, and coffee beans

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot.

He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing.

After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl.

He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?”

“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied.

“Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.

“Father, what does this mean?” she asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity– the boiling water.

However, each one reacted differently.

The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.

The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.

However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

“Which are you,” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean? “

Moral:
In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us.

A POUND OF BUTTER

There was a farmer who sold a pound of butter to the baker. One day the baker decided to weigh the butter to see if he was getting a pound and he found that he was not. This angered him and he took the farmer to court. The judge asked the farmer if he was using any measure. The farmer replied, amour Honor, I am primitive. I don't have a proper measure, but I do have a scale." The judge asked, "Then how do you weigh the butter?" The farmer replied "Your Honor, long before the baker started buying butter from me, I have been buying a pound loaf of bread from him. Every day when the baker brings the bread, I put it on the scale and give him the same weight in butter. If anyone is to be blamed, it is the baker."

What is the moral of the story? We get back in life what we give to others. Whenever you take an action, ask yourself this question: Am I giving fair value for the wages or money I hope to make? Honesty and dishonesty become a habit. Some people practice dishonesty and can lie with a straight face. Others lie so much that they don't even know what the truth is anymore. But who are they deceiving? Themselves

value

Value-A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?"
Hands started going up.
He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this." He proceeded to crumple the dollar bill up.
He then asked, "Who still wants it?"Still the hands were up in the air.
"Well," he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe.
He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty. "Now who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air.
"My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way.
We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. You are special - Don't ever forget it!

Values at learning place

Behavior of a person determines the type of values that person possess. Our values reflect in every action that we do. “The interactions that go on
—with your parents, the school, your friends—
that’s where
values come into play…
it’s the process.”
This article talks about how to help trainees explore their values.

Creating Learning Enviornments

Hello!

The question of how to create effective learning environment in the absence of certain external factors had triggered my brain. In search of my answer to this I came across the link mentioned below. It has a variety of ways in which a classroom can be made more effective.

Thanks!!
